There are some steps to take once installing your worktop which will increase their durability. As with everything good in life, comes a worthy amount of pride and dedication. Afterall, if you wanted something other than the unbeatable warming charm of natural wood you would have chosen a composite or plastic. Do not be put off by this, once you know how to maintain your worktop it will become a second nature and you’ll be doing a simple wipe down with a cloth without even realising.
Timeless elegance. Just as Mother Earth intended it to be. Wood is a material that never prevails in popularity when it comes to kitchen and household design. No one can disagree that a natural wooden kitchen worktop looks incredible and instantly reforms the aura of a room.
Naturally hygienic. Not only is cross- food contamination something to consider, but through the Covid-19 epidemic we all were re-educated on the importance of keeping our households free from bacteria and diseases that can easily spread. Germs in the kitchen can be a real thing, but with choosing wood as your worktop you have chosen a material with natural anti-bacterial properties on account of it being sealed properly with a non-toxic mineral oil.
It’s a match! As well as being an eco-friendly choice for your home, solid wood stunningly compliments any colour scheme and any kitchen style you chose. Whether you’re aiming for a traditional rustic look or fancy a bit of modern luxury.
Wood looks better with age. Some people steer away from a wooden worktop due to the worry of it looking worn and damaged, however the colour of your natural wooden worktop will naturally deepen through time and the grain will grow with character. Some people love this look and others want it to stay as it was when it was first installed. Whichever way you want your worktop to look we can assist with your desire by offering regular maintenance, leaving your kitchen oozing with class and style year after year.
Exclusivity. Every slab will have its own natural grain, giving each kitchen its own exclusive character and your hard wooden worktop will be completely unique to anyone else’s.
Wood is a natural material therefore it is softer than some other cheaper artificial materials that commonly get installed for worktops. Make sure you always use a chopping board to not cause damage and marks to the worktop. If your worktop isn’t sealed and protected correctly it’s possible for water spills to create damage such as swelling and black marks- especially if you allow the liquid to remain there without swiping and drying the area. Scorch marks are common damages that we are called in to remove. Be mindful when placing hot pots and pans down to avoid these types of burns. If any damages such as the ones listed above do arise, please do not worry as we can fix them. We know they can be annoying and what an eyesore they can be, especially once you know it’s there it seems you can’t see past the damage. We want you to be proud of your kitchen again which is why we love to see the reaction of our clients when they see the results of their repair or restoration. Another option we offer is regular sealing and general maintenance. Rather than have your worktop worn down through general wear and tear we can sand down, reseal, reoil or whatever TLC it requires on a quarterly or half-yearly basis. Not only will this avoid ever having to do a greater restoration, but this will also be a way to keep your worktop more sanitary. With the resealing of a wooden worktop it makes it much harder for germs to harbour as it stops your wood becoming porous.
What are the wood choices?
Hard woods are generally used to make worktops, as opposed to soft woods, like pine. Popular choices of solid wood worktops include oak, walnut and iroko (African teak). Oak is the most well-known wood used for worktops. It’s a hardwearing wood and looks good. Walnut, while a more expensive option, can be highly polished to create a modern, stylish look. Oak and Iroko are cheaper woods than walnut. Iroko is more resistant to temperature and moisture.
